Why Winter Tires Matter in Tillsonburg This Snow Season

Lake-effect squalls, icy back roads and cold mornings are part of life in Oxford and Norfolk County. Here's what winter tires do, why all-seasons fall short, and when to make the switch.

Every year it happens the same way. The first real snowfall arrives, Broadway and Highway 3 turn slick overnight, and the ditches along the county roads start collecting cars. Whether you've been driving for fifty years or you just got your G2, the right tires make a bigger difference to your winter safety than almost anything else on your vehicle.

Winter tires aren't just for snow

Most people think of winter tires as "snow tires," but the biggest difference is temperature. The rubber in all-season tires starts to stiffen once it drops below about 7°C. Stiff rubber can't grip the road properly, even when the pavement is dry. Winter tires use a softer compound that stays flexible in the cold, so they keep their grip on cold, wet, slushy and icy roads.

7°C

The magic number. Below this temperature, all-season rubber stiffens and loses grip, even on dry roads.

They also have deeper tread and thousands of small slits called sipes. These bite into snow and ice and push slush away from the tire, which helps you start, steer and, most importantly, stop.

Why it matters around Tillsonburg

Our part of Southwestern Ontario gets more than its share of winter. Snow squalls off Lake Erie can roll in quickly, visibility can drop in minutes, and open stretches between Tillsonburg, Delhi, Aylmer, Norwich and Ingersoll are prone to blowing snow and black ice. Add in daily commutes to Woodstock or London on the 401, and you're asking a lot of your tires from November to April.

Rural roads aren't always plowed or salted first. Stopping a few car lengths sooner at a snowy intersection or on a hill can be the difference between a close call and a collision.

"I have all-wheel drive. Do I still need them?"

✗ MYTH

"My AWD or 4x4 handles winter on its own."

✓ FACT

AWD helps you get moving, but it doesn't help you stop or turn. That's all down to your tires.

Your brakes and steering rely entirely on how well your tires grip the road. An AWD SUV on all-season tires can feel confident pulling away from a light, then slide right through the next stop sign. Winter tires give every vehicle, from a compact car to a full-size pickup, better control when it counts.

When to put them on

A good rule of thumb is to install winter tires once daytime temperatures stay below 7°C, usually late October to mid-November in our area. Don't wait for the first snowfall. That's when every shop in the region gets busy. Swap back to your all-seasons in spring once temperatures stay consistently above 7°C.

Quick tips before you buy

Look for the mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall. It means the tire meets the industry standard for severe snow performance.

✓Install all four. Mixing winter and all-season tires makes the vehicle unpredictable.

✓Check your tire pressure often. It drops as the temperature falls.

✓Check your tread depth each fall. Worn winter tires lose much of their grip in snow.

✓Consider a second set of rims. It makes seasonal changeovers quicker and protects your regular wheels from salt.
